Bordetella And Grooming
Avoiding Kennel Cough
Bordetella (Bordetella bronchisepticathe) short name for the bacterium that causes kennel cough, is a major concern in many grooming environments. Most reputable groomer shopss will require proof of Bordetella vaccination for dogs to help prevent the spread of this highly contagious respiratory disease. Since dogs are in close contact with each other and the grooming environment during a visit, the risk of transmission is high.
However, as a mobile groomer that sees dogs one at a time, we practice strict hygiene and disinfection protocols between our client dogs to reduce the risk of Bordetella transmission.
While we strongly recommend the vaccine, there are some dogs that do not need the Bordetella vaccine. Dogs that socialize with other dogs will definately need it. Many groomers who take on more than one dog at at time, and therefore should require proof of the vaccine in your dog. That being said, it may not be necessary for dogs that rarely leave their homes and don't interact with other animals. This would include dogs that only use a mobile grooming service as they are not in contact with other dogs and we sanitize between dogs.
